Perma Guard Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) is a safe, non-toxic substance made up of fossils of freshwater organisms and marine life. It is a feed supplement, dewormer for animals and a treatment for stored grain.

Millions of years ago, these one-celled organisms called diatoms took the minerals from the waters and created protective shells for themselves. Under a microscope, these crushed diatoms resemble shards of broken glass.

DE kills bugs physically by actually puncturing the insect's exo-skeleton, causing death by dehydration. While it is deadly to insects, it does not endanger animals, plants or people. However, caution should be exercised to guard against inhaling DE dust when applying.

Suggested Uses for DE:

  • 50% DE and 50% Sulphur as a dust for lice, mange, fleas.
  • Add to finished feed at the rate of 7 to 10 lbs DE per tonne of feed. Use two weeks on, two weeks off for a dewormer, parasite control.
  • Add to stored grains at 5 to 7 lbs per tonne of grain. It is most effective when applied at the elevator or auger when grain is being moved into storage.
  • Dust field crops and gardens to coat the whole plant. Effective against bugs, beetles, aphids, caterpillars and many other insects. Several applications may be necessary.

Available in a 50 lb bag or by the pound.

More Detailed Information....on DE

Millions of years ago, in all the waters of the earth, microscopic one-celled plants called diatoms took the minerals from the waters and created protective shells for themselves. Diatoms once lived in quantities far beyond the mind's ability to conceive, and as they died their shells drifted to the bottom of the sea beds. There are now more than 1,500 ways in which man benefits from this incredible material left by diatoms, whose shells are composed largely of Silicon Dioxide, along with trace minerals.

While other insecticides kill chemically, and insects, most usually over time, develop an immunity to the chemicals, DE kills bugs physically and insects have not yet been known to develop immunity to a physical action. Diatomaceous Earth is certain death to insects because they kill by actually puncturing the insect's exoskeleton, disrupting its soft waxy shell structure, chewing up its digestive organs and causing death in a short time by dehydration. While it is deadly to insects, it does not endanger animals, plants or people.

Diatomaceous Earth, properly ground, processed and applied to grain and seeds, has a marvelous ability to repel insect invasion. The dust, almost as fine as talc, under a powerful microscope looks like shards of broken glass. Apparently insects recognize their danger and STAY OUT.

If eggs are in the grain prior to treatment with Diatomaceous Earth, they seem to be unharmed. However, the minute the egg hatches, the tender insect is immediately exposed to the "drying effect" of the DE and dies before doing any damage to the grain.

DE is not a poison and there are no poisonous fumes making proper application essential. Most grains are well protected at the rate of 7 1bs per tonne of grain. Soybeans and oats require 10 1bs per tonne for adequate protection.

When added to animal feeds, at an amount not to exceed 2 percent by weight of the total feed ration, DE prevents "clumping" of feed particles by keeping them separate. This improves f1owability, mixability and handling of the animal feed. Therefore, the surface area of feed exposed to the digestive processes--both bacterial and enzymatic--is increased and more feed is actually digested and utilized. DE also contains a small amount of 14 trace minerals.

It is wise to apply DE prior to insect infestation. While the DE is safe for animals, plants and humans, it is best to guard against inhaling the DE dust when applying.

DE has been used for worming animals, controlling fly larvae in the manure, as a trace mineral mixture, an insecticide, a treatment for stored grain and a soil conditioner DE is a safe way to control insects, worms, etc. It kills by dehydration rather than poisoning, a process which takes 6 to 72 hours to kill.

Field Crops

  • Dust or spray DE at the rate of approximately 5 to 10 pounds per acre

Gardens

  • Apply DE so as to coal the whole plant. It is suggested to put some at the base of the plant, this will help enrich the soil while at the same time discourage or kill insects. DE has no detrimental effects on any types of earthworms.

Ants

  • Dust a generous amount of DE directly on the ant hill and extend out about five feet from the ant hill. Reapply after a rain when ground is dry.

Roaches

  • Spray or dust DE on any area, cracks, baseboards where insects hide. Also apply where feed and foodstuffs are stored.

Flies

  • Use DE in areas where there are all types of livestock. Spray weekly on walls, partitions, feeding troughs and watering areas.

Pets

  • One can rub D.E into the coat of the animal. This may give an effect of dryness. This is only temporary and will clear up after bathing. Your pets will receive benefits as a result of feeding DE at 1/2% to 1% of their total feed.

Livestock

  • A mixture of 50% DE and 50% sulphur can be dusted on or rubbed into animal's coat Will not harm animal if they get some in their mouth. Feeding instructions: Feed at the rate of 7 to10 Ibs DE per tonne of finished feed. Use two weeks on/two weeks of. Can be fed along with sulphur al 3 lbs per tonne. When DE is fed to animals, the fly population may drop to the point where it isn't necessary to spray during the fly season.

DE for stored grains should be used at 5 to 71bs per ton or 1 oz per bushel. It is wise to apply D.E prior to insect infestation. While the DE is safe for animals, plants and humans, it is best to guard against inhaling the DE dust when applying.

Bio-Ag Consultants & Distributors Inc makes no claims as to the effectiveness of using DE with regards to these uses The buyer will have to decide on his/her own.
