- About 16% of the world's farmland is free
of fertility problems, or "constraints", such as chemical
contamination, acidity, salinity or poor drainage.
- In parts of Asia, as little as 6% of farmland
is free of such problems. North America has the largest share
of the best land at 29%.
- Agriculture is being pretty successful at
keeping the world in food. It's been somewhat less successful
in nuturing the natural recourses that underpin that production
capacity.
- Aluminum contamination is high enough on
17% of the farmland worldwide that it's toxic to plants.
- Salt deposits are a significant problem on
irrigated land. Nearly 4 million acres of farmland is lost to
excessive salt every year, or about 1% of irrigated area worldwide.
- Rhizobia bacteria which live in nodules on
the roots of legumes and fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, and
the mycorrhizae, small fungal threats which penetrate plant roots
and allow nutrients to be transferred directly from the soil
into the plant's root system.
- The use of readily available, soluble mineral
fertilizers bypasses or short circuits the biological processes
to which the plants have become adapted and makes the nutrients
directly available to the growing crop. This can result in luxury
uptake of nutrients by the plant, and has consequences not only
in terms of the health of the growing crop and its susceptibility
to pests and diseases, but also in terms of the quality of the
end product.
- Depletion of organic matter in soil also
is widespread, reducing fertility and moisture retention and
increasing emissions of carbon dioxide into the air, which is
believed a factor in global warming.
- Chemical fertilizers aren't effective unless
sufficient organic matter remains in the ground.
The Strutt report, 'Modern Farming
and the Soil', published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries
and Food (MAFF-Great Britain) in 1970, concluded that 'some soils
are now suffering from dangerously low organic matter levels and
could not be expected to sustain the farming systems which have
been imposed on them.' The biological activity of the soil, which
depends on the availability of nutrients and energy supplied by
soil organic matter and crop and livestock residues, has declined
correspondingly. Given that much of the chemical weathering which
takes place in soils is the result of the activity of soil microorganisms,
then the ability of the soil to supply nutrients to the growing
crop from its own reserves is going to be diminished by a reduction
in soil biological activity.
| Calphos - Soft Rock Phosphate |
- Long Lasting
- Fast Acting
- Odourless
- Will not burn
- Will not rust machinery
Calphos is a naturally occurring
combination of phosphorus, calcium and trace minerals. Calphos
has been used for over 40 years as a major nutrient source in
some of the finest natural fertilizers. When soil testing shows
deficiencies of calcium and phosphate, Calphos is a valuable tool
to increase these minerals. Technically, it is known as colloidal
phosphate which means that the particles are small and readily
available for the plant to use. Calphos is guaranteed to contain
not less than 20% total phosphoric acid and 20% calcium with available
phosphoric acid of 3%.
Calphos is available in 50
lb bags or bulk by the truckload.
Greensand conditions your soil natures way.
- Chemical Free
- Weed Free
- Non Burning
- Spreads Easily
Jersey Greensand (glauconite) is an iron-potassium silicate
that imparts a green colour to the minerals in which it occurs.
Greensand contains marine potash
plus silica, iron oxide, magnesium, lime and phosphoric acid along
with over 30 trace minerals. Greensand is highly recommended for
the conditioning of pasture lands, orchards, field crops, fruits
and vegetable crops.
Nonburning Greensand is in
great demand by horticulturalists, nursery operators and gardeners
as a valuable, economical asset in growing strong, hardy plants,
improving colours, prolonging the bloom of both flowers and foliage
plants.
Greensand is of a soft nature
and will break down and become a part of the soil.
It will not lose its strength
in storage, and can be applied any time of year.
Available in 50 LB bags.
Kelp
Meal for soil applications is composed
of pur Ascophyllum nodosum from the cold and clean North
Atlantic cost of Canada. It is suitable for all crops and applications
and can be mixed with most soil conditioners and fertilizers.
Apply in the spring as soon as the soil can be worked for field
crops, row crops, trees and orchards, turf grasses and lawns,
seedbeds, bedding plants, potting mixes, fertilizer mixes and
composts. The ability of Kelp Meal to supply organic matter, readily
available chelated nutrients and soil conditioning properties
make it a valuable addition to any fertilizer mix.
In addition, the trace minerals in Kelp Meal
are a valuable feed
supplement for all livestock.
Available in 25 kg bags.
This extract derived from 100%
pure Ascophyllum nodosum is rich in both micro and macro
elements and compares in nutrient content to manure. This non-polluting,
natural agricultural product meets the standards of Organic Crop
Improvement Association (OCIA & OCPP) for products used in organic agriculture
systems.
It is used most frequently
as a foliar spray for agricultural and horticultural crops.
Why do we recommend Soluble
Seaweed Extract:
- increases the uptake of trace
minerals resulting from foliar feeding;
- increases marketable yields;
- improves frost resistance
for sensitive plants;
- enhances germination and
emergence when used as a seed soak;
- reduces insect damage and
prevents fungal diseases;
- promotes better root growth;
- is compatible with most herbicides,
fungicides and insecticides;
- increases shelf life for
fruits and vegetables;
- improves plant appearance
and colour.
"Forage treated with Soluble Seaweed Extract
has a strong potential to enhance the immune systems of livestock
and improve their ability to fight stress and ultimately produce
higher gains," reports Vivien Allen, a Texas Tech University
agronomist.
Available in a 20 kg (44 LB) box or by the
pound.
| Feed Mother Earth Product |
This product is custom formulated to use outside on lawns, vegetable and flower gardens. It contains molasses, nitrogen, phosphorus, minerals, vitamins and micronutrients. These nutrients feed the soil life. With the soil life fed an active, domestic plant growth will excel. GMO free. Minimum analysis 2-2-1 and 3% water-soluble calcium.
Benefits:
Less watering. As nutrients are replaced in the soil, particularly carbon, the moisture needs will be reduced.
Less cutting of lawns (compared to high nitrogen fertilizers).
Less prone to insects, disease, molds, fungus, droughts, etc. The soil microbes will consume more of the thatch layer.
Results increase in successive years
Fertilizer requirements are reduced or eliminated.
Directions:
One 13 kg (10L) container is designed to supply 2,000 to 3,000 square feet of lawn/garden area per year. It is best to use this product after the ground has been worked up. Use half in early spring and the remainder in late spring or early summer.
